RAISING A VILLAGE   “It takes all of us, doing all we can, all the time to make our communities work and to be able to reach out to help other communities in need.” Amy Sowers   Avatars first outreach was to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. When we first saw the pictures on the news of all the people suffering and the lack of response on the part of our government we knew in our hearts that we had to do something to make a difference. We were in the studio working on our first CD at the time and we decided that we had to start raising monies immediately to effect a change. So we put out a mini-CD entitled “Invitation” to give hope to the victims and to help in some way to alleviate the suffering. As Spirit would have it we heard of another church in our community that was helping to re-locate families from New Orleans to the Winston-Salem area and we sent our monies to them. We raised over $1000 toward this effort. ……………………………………………………….. Hurricane Katrina YOU Tube with the music of invitation. ………………………………………………………. Avatar gave several concerts and lots of coffee houses over the next year at the Unity of Winston-Salem in order to raise monies to help buy a new piano for our church and much needed audio/video equipment. We raised over $1000 toward this effort. We are very pleased to say that our church now has both. Avatar in concert at Unity of Winston-Salem ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………     Branches Holistic Healing Center was opening in Winston-Salem and Avatar was invited to sing for this grand occasion. We had a wonderful afternoon singing on the porch of Branches and entertaining the folks who were coming to take there first view of the new center. It was a consciousness-raising afternoon complete with Avatar participating in tai chi, eating lots of healthy food and having fun with new and old friends.   Avatar was asked to open Unity of Winston-Salem’s 1st Fall festival to help raise money for the music department.     Avatar was asked to participate in the Peace Walk and Festival in downtown Winston-Salem. We participated with other artists in the area in the making of a CD single entitled “Many Voices One Song” that helped to raise monies for the establishment of a United States Department of Peace. Avatar was asked to sing in an effort to help raise money for the children at the North Carolina Group Homes to be able to take their annual trip to Washington D.C. We received a letter stating that they had raised over a $1000 toward the trip and they could not have done it without us. Avatar sang at the Methodist Youth Rally in Shalom, N.C. and connected with the person that started Race Track Ministries. This is a ministry focused on family and reaching more young people by staging events at the race track. Avatar sang for them on several occasions and helped them raise money for their ministry.     Avatar at the Elkin racetrack raising money for Racetrack Ministries …………………………………………………………………………   Last summer Avatar was asked to sing at Greensboro’s Unity annual picnic. Reverend Catherine Padgett joined us as we sang “The Beauty of It All”.
